Frequently Asked Questions

What does KHAK mean?

The word "khak" originates from Persian, where it means "earth" or "dust." It symbolises a connection to the natural world and the grounding properties associated with the earth. In choosing "khak" as our brand name for grounding shoes, we’re capturing the essence of being connected to the earth and embracing its energy and benefits.

Where are your shoes made?

KHAKs are handcrafted by a skilled group of artisans in Turkey, using traditional generational methods.

How do I choose the right size?

We've put together an easy size guide to help you pick the right size. You can access our size guide here.

How does 'Made to Order' work?

When a size is out of stock, you'll notice that the 'Add to Cart' button transforms into 'Made to Order.'

When you place a 'Made to Order' order, we will then begin crafting your order, with anticipated shipping within approximately 2 weeks or less.

Can I exchange for another size?

KHAKs are designed to offer flexibility in fit. If they feel snug initially, they will naturally stretch with wear, and if they're a bit roomy, some may prefer a relaxed fit.

We recommend aiming for a slightly snug (but not tight) fit initially, as they will mould to your feet over time.

However, if you would like to exchange to a different size! Simply reach out to us within 30 days of receiving your order and we can offer you a complimentary exchange. Please check our return policy for more information.

Are 'Made to Order' purchases eligible for size exchange?

Rest assured, even with Made to Order purchases, you're still eligible for exchanges.

What's your return policy?

Our return policy can be viewed here. We have a 30-day return policy, which means you have 30 days after receiving your item to request a return.

To be eligible for a return, your item must be in the same condition that you received it, unused and in its original packaging.

To start a return, you can contact us at support@khakstore.com.au. or via our contact us page with your order number.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently do not offer international shipping. However if you are interested in our KHAKs, please get in touch with us to inquire. We may be able to make an exception.

Do I wear them with or without socks?

KHAKs are designed to be worn without socks, but feel free to wear them with socks if you prefer!

Will they smell if I don't wear socks?

No! Unlike most synthetic materials, leather is naturally breathable.

You'll be amazed how effective the natural leather is at absorbing sweat and minimising smell.

It's still advisable to air them out after wear to maintain their freshness.

Is it OK if I get them wet?

While our shoes are crafted from high-quality leather, it's best to avoid soaking them in water. However, they can withstand light splashes. If they do get wet, simply let them air dry naturally away from direct heat sources.

Does the leather sole have traction?

Our shoes feature natural buffalo leather soles, not synthetic rubber-plastic outsoles. Initially, they may not have much traction. However, after your first stroll on cement, minor scuffs will enhance traction.

Can you feel the copper plug?

Generally no, you won't feel the copper plug while wearing our grounding shoes. The plug is strategically placed within the sole of the shoe, and it's designed to be unobtrusive and comfortable for the wearer. You'll hardly notice it while enjoying the benefits of grounding.

What is grounding?

Grounding, also known as earthing, is the practice of connecting with the Earth's natural energy by physically touching or being in close proximity to the ground.

Our grounding shoes are designed with a 100% copper plug which goes through the sole of the shoe to facilitate this connection, allowing you to experience the benefits of grounding wherever you go. By wearing our shoes, you can enjoy the feeling of being grounded while protecting your feet, and without worrying about your feet getting hurt or dirty.

What are barefoot shoes?

Barefoot shoes are footwear designed to mimic the experience of walking barefoot while still providing some protection for the feet. They typically have a wide-toe box and zero-drop sole that allow for natural foot movement and sensory feedback. Barefoot shoes aim to promote better posture, balance, and foot strength by allowing the foot to function more naturally, similar to being barefoot.

What surfaces are grounded?

Grounding works on conductive surfaces like grass, soil, sand, concrete, or unpainted/unsealed wood. These materials allow the transfer of electrons between your body and the Earth, facilitating the grounding effect. However, surfaces like asphalt, vinyl, or carpeted floors are insulators and don't conduct electricity, so they won't facilitate grounding.

How do I clean/care for my shoes?

Care Instructions for Smooth Leather

Cleaning:
  • Use a soft, damp cloth to wipe off any dirt or dust from the surface of the shoes.
  • For tougher stains, use a mild soap or leather cleaner diluted in water. Gently scrub the affected area with a soft brush or cloth.
  • Avoid using harsh chemicals or solvents, as they can damage the leather.
Conditioning:
  • Apply a small amount of leather conditioner to a clean cloth.
  • Gently rub the conditioner into the leather using circular motions, focusing on areas that are prone to drying out or cracking.
  • Allow the conditioner to absorb into the leather for a few minutes, then buff off any excess with a dry cloth.
Protection:
  • Use a waterproofing spray specifically designed for leather to protect your shoes from water and stains.
  • Apply the spray evenly to the entire surface of the shoes, ensuring full coverage.
  • Reapply the waterproofing spray periodically, especially after cleaning or exposure to moisture.
Storage:
  • Store your leather shoes in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Use shoe trees or stuff the shoes with tissue paper to help them maintain their shape.
  • Avoid storing leather shoes in plastic bags or containers

Care Instructions for Nubuck / Suede

    Cleaning:
    • Use a nubuck brush or suede brush to gently remove any surface dirt or debris from the shoes.
    • For stubborn stains, use a nubuck/suede eraser or cleaner specifically designed for delicate leather.
    • Avoid using water directly on nubuck/suede, as it can cause staining or damage the leather.
    Protection:
    • Apply a nubuck/suede protector spray to your shoes to help repel water and prevent stains.
    • Ensure that the shoes are clean and dry before applying the protector spray, and follow the instructions on the product label for best results.
    • Reapply the protector spray periodically, especially after cleaning or exposure to moisture.
    Maintenance:
    • Use a nubuck brush or suede brush to gently restore the nap of the leather and remove any flattened areas.
    • Brush the shoes in one direction to lift the nap and restore the soft, velvety texture of the nubuck.
    • Avoid using excessive pressure or harsh bristles, as this can damage the delicate surface of the leather.
    Storage:
    • Store your nubuck or suede shoes in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
    • Use shoe trees or stuff the shoes with tissue paper to help them maintain their shape.
    • Avoid storing them in plastic bags or containers
